Art in the Park 2014

3:43:00 PM

We almost didn't go. I couldn't blame my sister. Summer has already started to make its presence felt and it couldn't have picked a better day. Fortunately I managed to convince her with minsan lang 'to and by noon, we were already on our way to Makati for some Art in the Park.

When she told me about it, I thought it was either a one-time thing or the first of a series. I was surprised to find out it's been going on for a while now—eight years, in fact! There was so much to see and if only the heat was a bit more bearable, we'd have stayed longer than an hour. That it was outdoors added an ounce of special to the experience, but it also made it challenging to go around and appreciate everything.

You'd have to forgive me again for forgetting to take note of some details.

Papier-mache horses decorated in tiles!
I believe these are part of FEATI University of Arts' exhibit. One of the guys said the horses were made by their professor, who lives in Bulacan. He threw that detail in after I asked if the papier-mache base was bought from Paete. Someone from the office brought loads of them once and I got the smallest size. I can only think of so many things to do with it!

Ang INK.
Frances Alvarez (one of their artists) and I used to be with a group in church that handles media and arts for the youth department. You should check out her work (not pictured)—girl has an eye for pretty! I got a copy of her coloring book for P100 and I'm now regretting that I didn't get any of her postcards.

I fangirl-ed like crazy in my head when I realized Raimund Marasigan was standing right in front of us. When I told my sister, she was like, "Isn't he from that band you like?" And I was like, *disbelieving look* "You mean, the Eraserheads? That band, sure." *eyeroll*

Postcards and komiks by Ang INK's Borg Sinaban.

Borg Sinaban found an instant fan in my sister. She bought two of his post cards and a copy of Mga Pagsubok ng Karagatan. He was so nice, but my sister was too shy to have a picture taken with him.

When I saw this, I remembered how I wanted to have a black and white room. Black walls and white accent pieces. This would have made a great focal point. Maybe when I get my own space.

Even if it was just a short while, I did have a grand time getting acquainted with even more local talent. It was nice to be surrounded with art that I could easily afford on a payday (but thank You, Lord, it wasn't). Not that I think it’d be a waste of hard-earned money. I just happen to have very little respect for financial wisdom when I see something I like.

There should be more gatherings like Art in the Park, which seeks to share this world of pretty <3 to the general public. Art is becoming less snooty and more welcoming, as the average person becomes less cynical and more appreciative.
