Event | Sinag Maynila Film Festival

"Pelikulang Pinoy, pusong Pinoy."

I don't know about you but that introductory video is getting me excited for Philippine cinema! What you just saw is the consolidated teaser trailer for all the films that will be featured on the country's first ever Sinag Maynila film festival—a passion project of Brillante Mendoza (quite possibly the biggest name in the Filipino indie film scene) and Solar Entertainment CEO Wilson Tieng.

Promoting a "healthy collaboration" with directors they themselves picked out, Mendoza and Tieng were constant figures in the entire film making process. The results are, as you would see from Ninja Party's trailer alone, works of art committed to tell stories with "very strong social issues". By bringing Sinag Maynila to such a masa venue as SM Cinema, the hope is that the greater public will begin to appreciate movies that "push boundaries" (read: not your run-of-the-mill kilig and drama-fests).

Sinag Maynila is not opening its competition to the public until 2016 but on its inaugural year, its audience will be served with works by independent filmmakers. Here's what you can expect to see in the coming week: Balut Country by Paul Sta Ana, Bambanti by Zig Dulay, Imbisibol by Lawrence Fajardo, Ninja Party by Jim Libiran and Swap by Rempton Zuasola.
