Pinto Art Museum | Awesome in Manila

I would—if I could—put Pinto Art Museum in a snow globe.

I had never been anywhere with a roof that could rival my love for the beach. White-washed walls, natural light at every turn, fresh air brushing from lush greenery. Never mind, for a minute, that Pinto is home to several collections of paintings, sculptures and mixed media. The place itself is a beauty to behold - a work of art, if you will.

Nestled on the hilly terrain of Antipolo, Rizal, Pinto Art Museum offers a piece of wonderland that's both easy on the wallet and within spitting distance of Metro Manila.

Pinto officially opened to the public in 2010, catering to art enthusiasts of all preferences and from all walks of life. The air in this place is not at all discriminating. You may be completely unfamiliar with the Picasso's and the Van Gogh's of the world, but you'll still find a thing or two to like at Pinto.

The Internet tells us that it is the private property of a neurologist-cum-art collector, Dr Joven Cuanang. The architect is Antonio Leano, a former artist-in-residence who was adamant in using old wood to decorate parts of the museum. Some of Leano’s pieces are displayed in the galleries.

The lot is divided into several galleries, a chapel, al fresco dining areas and a private residence. The whole place is easy to navigate if you follow the numbered sections, but finding your own way around it wouldn’t be a bad idea. It took us about two hours to see everything. That includes pausing for a moment with our favorite pieces and, um, feeling feelings.

How can anybody not fall in love with this place?

As for the artworks on display, well, it’s a matter of subjectivity. (Art is always subjective.) There were pieces that made me go "LOVE THIS, LOVE LOVE LOVIN’ THIS", most were okay and there are a few that required more effort to appreciate.

I wouldn't want to spoil the whole experience by showing you everything, so I prepared only my favorites:

From afar, it looks like it's covered in bubble wrap.

by Alwin Reamillo

Reamillio also took part in this year's Art Fair Philippines, as part of Tim-Aw Gallery's Content May Vary exhibition. Behind his collection is another mixed media piece - Antonio C Leano's On This Site Will Rise.

So nice to come across a pro-women execution that isn't anti-men.

Panalo: Swim, Bike, Run
by Freddie Montemayor

It was the simplicity that attracted my eyes to this Montemayor. I loved it even more when I realized there was more to it than black paint splatter.

I could not find the artist's name but if I could reassign a title to it, I'd call it "Forever Mood".

I love the gold in this setpiece!

Directions via commute:
You can find vans and FXs traveling to Rizal parked outside EDSA Star Mall. Get on one going to Antipolo and ask the driver to let you off Ynares Center. From Ynares, hail a tricycle that can take you to Pinto Art Museum. Not every driver would know Pinto, but it shouldn't be too hard to find someone who does. Overall travel time on a Saturday morning should be less than two hours.

Pinto Art Museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Ticket is P180 for adults.

Now, I have to ask:
Have you been to Pinto?
Did you see anything that moved you?
