Islands Leisure Hotel | Awesome in Manila

We had our sights on some hostels by the bay (mainly for the instant sunrise view) but somewhere along the planning process, we came across Islands Leisure Hotel and its Instagram-worthy facilities and suddenly, our minds were open to staying in other locations.

Islands Leisure is located in the residential section of Hibbard Avenue, 10 minutes away from Sibulan airport and a fiver from Silliman University. The area is quiet, perfect for a peaceful getaway, and surrounded by plenty of dining choices.

It's also pretty easy to miss from the outside (even with a sign), but we were lucky that our airport cab driver was familiar with it. If you won't be as fortunate, you can refer to the red door as the hotel facade's most defining landmark.

Our impressions

Before I show you our room, here's a visually orgasmic tour of Island Leisure's common areas:

From the foyer to the backhouse, there are plenty of spaces for guest use. Everywhere you look is an Instagram waiting to happen. There are conversation pieces here and there and we never, in our four-day stay, got tired of appreciating how it all came together.

They have their own restaurant which we only got to eat in for the complimentary breakfast.

Islands Leisure is a relatively small compound. It definitely has an old house look and vibe to it, so I wouldn't be surprised if it used to be a family vacation home.

They have spa and massage services, if you're into that. This part  also leads to the pool area. We would've loved to swim but were too lazy to ask and wait for the staff to change the water and clean up the leaves that fell into the pool.

With proper upkeep, it's easily the most relaxing spot in the hotel!

The room

We were supposed to book the Duo Pad (presumably smaller, cheaper and had separate beds), but it wasn't available. Fortunately, they had the Premier Room, the "best-seller" as we were told, open and on sale for half the regular rate (P1,300 per, still a couple of hunner bucks more expensive than the Duo) which, after reading through a few reviews on Instagram and Trip Advisor, we agreed to check into as our home base for the Dumaguete trip.

Transacting with Islands Leisure is fuss-free. I sent both a text to the mobile # on their website as well as an e-mail and got a response in less than two days. Not the fastest in terms of booking service, but they were easy to talk to and the process was simple so I didn't mind. The hotel required a 50% deposit before proceeding to reservation. Once this was accomplished, I just sent them a photo of the deposit slip and we were booked.

Check-in was just easy breezy. We only had to sign a form, show the deposit slip and they immediately handed us keys.

Our initial reaction when we entered the room was, "Wow. Sulit. We can't get anymore tita than this." The room itself is not spacious but it is well-designed and almost complete. A little too orange for my liking, but the color scheme is cohesive so I was able to live with it for a few days.

The room comes with usually-optional necessities like an alarm clock, a water heater, (reliable) WiFi connection and a hair dryer (!!!), as well as obviously-important appliances like cable TV (for our SkyCable and chilling needs), refrigerator and air conditioner. However, there were some things that were missing like a service telephone, complimentary drinking water and bath products.

The bathroom is petite, but comes with a hot shower. Pabebe nga lang ang tulo ng tubig from the sink. And no bidet for you sensitive lots.

As to whether all the features are working, we'd say everything except the bed (huh) worked fine. The bed, which is the most important piece of any hotel room, was slightly uncomfortable. It wasn't "hard" but on the first two nights, laying on it (switching to all possible sleeping positions) made me sore in the neck and torso. So much that by the second night, I just gave up and slept on the floor. When we reported it to the hotel staff, they said it was their first time to receive such complaint. So IDK, it could just be us but...yeah, I liked the floor better.

The air conditioner worked fine until our last night, when it just completely lost its chill (like, literally). WiFi is speedy for the most part - we were able to stream the church service live, without any interruption.

The stay included complimentary breakfasts. We had a choice of bacon or corned beef with egg and rice, coffee or hot chocolate, which we did take advantage of on the first morning. It wasn't awful (I'll say this much), but after the most delightful dinner at Lab-as, we were craving for something more palatable.

***

I gave Islands Leisure (three stars) on Trip Advisor. Had the bed been comfortable and the room come with bottles of drinking water (there's not a near-enough convenience store), I would have given them a perfect rating. The three stars were for the overall interior design and the staff who were friendly enough and quick to address our concerns.

Despite our far-from-perfect experience, I would still recommend Islands Leisure for those who are considering a trip to Dumaguete. The bed issue could be preferential, but it wouldn't hurt to look for a second opinion.
